“You’re a coach or consultant wanting to use email marketing for your business but don’t know where to start. I’ve got you. In this post I’ll be covering my 6 tips on How to create an email marketing strategy for coaching clients. Let’s go!”
Define your goals – What do you want to achieve with your email marketing campaign? More clients? A higher conversion rate? Better relationships with your current clients?
Get clear on what it is you want to achieve so at the end you’ll know whether you met your goals or not. Most people want to get more clients so as a coach if this is you, you’ll want to be nurturing your list a lot, emailing them regularly, providing a ton of value and sharing what it would be like to work with you.
Choose the right platform – This is a big one because there are so many options out there, but you need to find something that works for you and your business. I remember when I first started looking at systems I was so overwhelmed with all the information on the internet.
ActiveCampaign, Mailchimp, Constant Contact, GetResponse… The list goes on. And they all have different features, benefits and drawbacks.
After many years of using other people’s systems, we ended up launching our own. Paul and I have an extensive background working in IT and we’re super picky about systems. We’re really proud of ours – it’s called The Honest Tech Toolkit and is a full marketing system. It not only manages emails but will also handle funnels, websites, forms, all your contacts, and social media scheduling. It’s really extensive and we’re adding to it every day. Here’s what our clients are saying:

Create a list of subscribers – A common mistake people make when first starting out with email marketing is they add everyone they know to their list without getting explicit permission first. This is not only annoying but can also get you into some serious hot water. In addition, how do you know if they want what you are offering? Do this instead. Offer something for free in exchange for an email address. This is called a lead magnet and it’s how you’ll grow your list quickly. People are more likely to sign up if they’re getting something valuable in return.
Lead magnets can take the form of a quiz, an assessment, a guide, templates, checklists, planners, calendars, calculators, audio files – there are sooo many! The point of a good lead magnet is to provide something of value that your customer wants or needs to get them to give you their email address which you can then use for future marketing.
Here’s an example of a lead magnet to help grow your list.
4. Draft your email content – This is where the magic happens. You get to share your message with the world. But before you do, take some time to think about what you want to say and who your ideal customer is. What problems are they facing that you can help them with? What solutions do you have?
Once you have a clear understanding of your message and your customer, it’s time to start writing. Keep your emails short and sweet. People’s attention spans are shorter than ever these days so make sure you get to the point quickly.
The best way to structure your email is to follow this simple formula:
Subject line: attention grabbing headline
Opening: introduce yourself and let them know what they can expect in the email
Body: deliver on the promise made in the subject line and provide value
Closing: Thank them for reading and invite them to take action
Shorter emails are better. Share the value, drop a call to action and end it. That will make your subscribers want to open more of your emails in future.
5. Send out regular emails to your subscribers – This is where a lot of people fall down. They create a beautiful email, send it and then…crickets. Nothing. This can be disheartening I know. But, you need to be sending out emails on a regular basis if you want to keep your list engaged. How often is up to you but I recommend once a week at a minimum. More often is fine as long as you have something valuable to share. Some people will tell you to email everyday and that the more emails you send the more money you will make. I believe that to an extent but I also know that if you are continually selling to your list it won’t feel good to your subscribers and some may leave. Find the balance and what works for you.
6. Analyze the results of your campaign and make changes as needed – The final step in creating a successful email marketing strategy is to track your results and make changes as needed. Are people opening your emails? What about clicking through to your website? If they’re not doing either of those things then you need to take a look at your subject lines and see if they need some work. Are you providing value in your emails? If not, then that’s something you need to change.
You can use Google Analytics to track where people are coming from when they visit your website. This will help you to see which of your marketing channels is performing the best. If you see a lot of people coming from your email list then you know you’re on the right track.
Email marketing can be a great way to grow your coaching business but only if you do it right. Not only is it something you own, so if you lose access to your social media accounts you will have another way to communicate with your followers , but it’s also a great way to build relationships with your customers. So take the time to create a strategy that works for you and your business. It will be worth it in the long run.
