It’s a great way to reach out to your customers and prospects. But it’s also a crowded marketplace. In order to stand out, you need to level up your game.”
Here are 8 tips to help you do just that:
1. Define your goals for email marketing. What do you want to achieve? More sales? More leads? More web traffic? When you get that clear in your mind, creating campaigns will be easy. I use my list as another avenue to promote, and it’s mine. No one can take it away from me. I feel secure knowing I’ve grown it. I know where the people came from (i.e. I didn’t buy it from someone), I know how old it is and how people got there (we tag them all in our CRM – customer relationship management tool The Honest Tech Toolkit – click here to check it out).
Knowing that I created it myself makes me feel good, and having an additional way to showcase our business is a very important part of our marketing strategy.
2. Choose the right software. There are many options available, so make sure you pick one that fits your needs. When we first started we used standard software that many people use. But we found that our open rates weren’t so great and degraded over time meaning less people were opening our emails. Now we have our own software which I mentioned in point 1. Our open rates have gone from 18% to 60%. It’s incredible. Using The Honest Tech Toolkit was the best thing we did to improve our email marketing.
3. Create a list of subscribers. You need to have people to email! You can do this by offering something for free in exchange for their email address. This is what is known as a “lead magnet”. It’s something of value that you offer to your prospects to see who is interested. For example, we offer free cheat sheets and guides to help coaches grow their businesses. We offer it in exchange for an email address. When we do that it does two things. It brings the right people to us and it helps us to grow our list. Then we have more people to market to.

If you click on that you’ll be taken to an opt-in page. If people like what they see they’ll fill in their details and our system will automatically send it to them. It works a treat to grow our list and this is what we help our clients do too.
4. Craft an eye-catching email template. This is the first thing people will see when they open your email, so make sure it’s well designed and looks professional. Ours is very simple, but has all the right information on it. You want to make sure you have your address and an option to unsubscribe on every email. The email providers will not be happy with you if you don’t offer a way for people on your list to unsubscribe. Plus it’s just good practice. Have you ever been on a list only to find you cannot unsubscribe? It’s not cool … so don’t do it. Give your subscribers and option to opt-out.

5. Write attention-grabbing subject lines. This is what will determine whether or not people actually open your email, so make sure you put some thought into it. A good subject line is key to getting your emails opened. I remember I once sent an email that said “Hot gossip!” … that thing had such a high open rate it was not funny. People are naturally inquisitive. Give them a reason to want to open it by making the subject intriguing.
6. Send interesting and valuable content. This is what will keep people on your list. If you’re sending them rubbish they’ll soon unsubscribe. So make sure you’re sending them something they actually want to read. Think about what you would like to receive if you were in their shoes and write about that. Share blog posts, lives that you’re doing, a new offer that you have to share, something funny that happened to you that you can relate to your business. Switch it up and keep it interesting and they’ll continue to open your emails.

7. Promote special offers and discounts. This is a great way to increase sales and get people engaged with your brand. Did you know that people expect to receive promotional material via email? I remember I was on a list where the lady promoted everyday. Now to some that might sound daunting but I LOVED IT! She had such great offers, I looked forward to receiving her offers. I bought a few over time but knew that I could pick and choose as and when they were sent to me. I ended up in her high end mastermind so it paid off! Definitely consider using your email list to promote your products and services.
8. Measure results and optimize campaigns. Always track your results so you can see what’s working and what’s not working. Then you can adjust your campaigns accordingly. If you can’t measure it, you shouldn’t do it, and you should be checking the success of every campaign. I often go back and look at the subject lines to see what impact it had. Check that your emails have been opened, and see how many people clicked on links if you asked them to. See how many bounced and how many were ignored. Changing things up and improving over time will help with your cashflow so definitely do NOT miss this step.
